Eklipse

A total solar eclipse

What is the Eklipse project?

The Government of Navarre -through the Department of University, Innovation and Digital Transformation - and NICDO -with Planetarium Pamplona - have designed the Eklipse Project, whose main objective is to take advantage of this unique astronomical event to position Navarre as one of the regions of the peninsula where this planetary phenomenon can be observed in its entirety.

A total solar eclipse

What will happen on 12 August 2026?

On 12 August 2026 the eclipse will begin across Navarre at almost the same time, around 7:32 p.m. official time. The Sun will already be very low (about 7°) towards the west-northwest, so from the beginning it will be a “sunset” eclipse. From that time onwards, the Moon will cover the Sun until the peak of the phenomenon, the total eclipse, which in our region will be fully visible between 8:28 p.m. and 8:29 p.m. However, it will not be seen in the same way throughout the entire Foral Community of Navarre. The difference between seeing it totally or partially can vary in areas only a few kilometres apart.

The day of two nights

On 12 August 2026, the first eclipse of the so-called “Iberain trio” will take place. The second eclipse will be visible on 2 August 2027. From Navarre, we will see a partial eclipse. The total solar eclipse will be seen from the southern tip of Spain. The third eclipse will take place on 26 January 2028. On that occasion, there will be an annular solar eclipse: the Moon will pass in front of the Sun, but will not cover it completely, leaving a ring of light around it. Once again, in Navarre we will observe this event as a partial eclipse.

A total solar eclipse

Why will the eclipse only be visible in a geographical strip?

When the Moon passes in front of the Sun, its shadow does not cover the entire surface of the Earth equally. There are two shadow zones that are of interest to us for a total eclipse: The umbra zone -this is the central part of the shadow, the darkest part. In this zone, the Moon covers the entire disc of the Sun. And the penumbra -the area surrounding the umbra-, where the Moon covers only part of the Sun. Anyone in the Umbra zone will be able to see the total eclipse, and anyone in the penumbra zone will only see a partial eclipse.

Eklipse Special School of Stars

Stars and Eklipse?

In the 2025-2026 academic year, the School of Stars educational programme will feature EKLIPSE as the core element of its educational and training proposals. Adapted to the school curricula of each educational cycle, they will also be enriched with new elements and infrastructures specially designed to transport students into the depths of the astronomical phenomenon par excellence.
